Amidst devastating current events throughout the world, the Red Cross has been at work responding to thousands of people in need around the globe:
- Ebola outbreak – As the deadliest outbreak of Ebola in recorded history continues to devastate Western Africa, the American Red Cross is supporting localized efforts with both financial and staffing support. Remote volunteers are providing remote mapping and information management in the region, which are printed out and consulted by health teams every day, as well as loaded onto relief workers’ GPS devices.
- Victims in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza – Red Cross Red Crescent staff and volunteers in Occupied Palestine Territories and Israel are helping people in need. Israel’s Magen David Adom and the Palestine Red Crescent are providing aid to the victims of airstrikes, rocket firings, and other hostilities. Two Palestine Red Cross volunteers have lost their lives while providing humanitarian aid this past weekend.
- Crisis in Iraq –The Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has been active in 14 governorates in response to the displacement caused by armed conflict in Iraq that began on June 10. IRCS has been one of the main providers of assistance to the estimated 447,000 displaced persons and has 4,000 active volunteers providing relief aid. IRCS has been providing food, water and other items to individuals and families as well as longer-term support to communities.
