Superstorm Sandy Impacts National Blood Supply

Image

Superstorm Sandy forced the cancellation of approximately 300 American Red Cross blood drives in 13 states along the East Coast and the District of Columbia, and thousands of blood and platelet donors have been unable to keep their appointments to give.

Make a lifesaving donation and help those in need. Schedule your appointment to give blood or platelets through redcrossblood.org. You can also make a contribution to disaster relief at redcross.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. An average of 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day across the country to help treat accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders. These patients and others rely on blood products during their treatment. This need does not diminish when disaster strikes.

Remember – it’s the blood that is already on the shelves that helps save lives before, during and after a disaster.
